The Security Illusion

The Security Illusion

Security is a feeling, they say.
But is it really just that? Can it be more? Can it be a status?
Most people in modern civilization feel very safe in their daily lives.
If something happens, you can take out your cell phone and call the fire department, the ambulance or the police.
They will come and help you with whatever emergency you have.
But is that really the case?

Considerations

  • If your frying pan catches fire and ignites the cooker hood filter, would you rather call the fire department or put out the fire yourself with a fire extinguisher?
  • If you're driving and have an accident that causes arterial bleeding in an extremity, would you rather call the ambulance or put on a Tourniquet and stop the bleeding?
  • If you and your family are attacked on the street by a mentally ill person with a knife, would you rather call the police or defend yourself?

Reality

If you are now asking yourself, "Why or?" you are right.

  • Firefighters in Central Europe have an average target response time of about 10 min. In this time all your property will be irreparably damaged and you would be dead if you are still in the building.
  • The ambulance in Central Europe has an average target response time of about 15 min. In this time you will not survive an arterial bleeding.
  • The police usually have a reactive function in violent crimes. Only you can save yourself from a deadly attack in time.

So here we see a serious deficit in equipment and training of ordinary citizens.
Most importantly, the illusion of security has led to this state of affairs.

Be responsible and create real security - be a Sentinel!
