Drones have become a permanent feature of the airspace. The central challenge is no longer whether they appear, but how early they can be detected, correctly assessed and effectively countered.
An underestimated challenge
A robust risk assessment in drone defence does not start with countermeasures – but with a precise understanding of possible control systems, drones and methods of employment.
Even for direct radio links, focusing only on common COTS systems is not enough. Widely available solutions such as ELRS, Crossfire and many other variants expand the spectrum considerably. Combined with other control methods – e.g. mobile networks, fibre-optic cable or autonomous waypoint flight – this creates a wide range of technical options that detection must reliably cover.
The technical characteristics of the drones in turn determine which forms of threat are realistically feasible. In addition to technical expertise, a sound operational understanding is needed to map these threat forms onto the local environment. Only when their realistic feasibility has been tested does a robust risk analysis emerge.
Countermeasures pose a further, separate challenge: they must neutralise drones efficiently and at range wherever possible, in line with the drone’s design and technical characteristics – without creating
additional hazards through crash or uncontrolled effects.
