How a Counter-UAS System Works

A modern Counter-UAS system typically consists of three coordinated layers:

  • Detection – Sensors (RF, Optical, Radar, Acoustic) that identify and track drones
  • Verification – Threat assessment, situational picture and decision support
  • Effectors – Soft- or Hardkill measures to neutralise the threat

Not every organisation requires the full technical chain. Many clients deliberately limit themselves to detection and verification and combine these with organisational response measures. Technical effectors are only added where the risk profile and legal framework justify them.

In all cases, the technical components only become effective when they are embedded in clear processes, defined responsibilities and a realistic understanding of the local threat situation.

Challenges & Interfaces
Many organisations invest in sensors or effectors without first clarifying what needs to be protected, against which threats, and under which operational conditions. The result is often fragmented capabilities that fail under real pressure.

A high-performing system must be aligned with the overall drone defence concept – particularly with risk assessment, organisational detection and response processes, and regular testing.
